The Fort Albany Women’s Shelter and Transition Home provides a safe, supportive, and healing environment for women and children experiencing family violence or crisis. Our facility that supports not only shelter services but also land-based and cultural healing programs. We are seeking a reliable, skilled, and respectful Maintenance Worker to join our team and help ensure our property and buildings remain safe, functional, and welcoming.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Shelter Director, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for the upkeep and repair of buildings, systems, equipment, and grounds. The ideal candidate will have experience in general maintenance and property care, take pride in their work, and understand the importance of maintaining privacy, safety, and dignity for residents and staff.
Key Responsibilities
· Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs for all shelter and transition home facilities.
· Handle minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting work.
· Maintain the property grounds, including lawn care, snow removal, fencing, and outdoor structures.
· Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as tractors, mowers, and snowblowers.
· Ensure all safety and security systems (fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting) are in proper working order.
· Coordinate with contractors for major repairs or specialized maintenance.
· Support land-based programs by preparing outdoor spaces and ensuring safe, accessible environments.
· Keep detailed maintenance logs and report safety or security issues promptly.
Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent required; trades training or technical certifications are an asset.
· Minimum 2 years’ experience in building or property maintenance.
· Working knowledge of safety standards, building systems, and equipment operation.
· Experience operating small engines and groundskeeping equipment.
· Valid Class G driver’s license and clean driving record.
· Must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

· Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
· Respectful, culturally aware, and trauma-informed approach when working near residents.
· Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
· Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing outdoor work in all seasons.
Work Environment
· Combination of indoor and outdoor work on a large property.
· Occasional evening, weekend, or emergency call-outs may be required.
